The Maui Whale Festival, a month-long celebration of our favorite migrating mammal, commences with the Run & Walk for the Whales on Feb. 4 followed that day by Tales of the Whale, a presentation by Pacific Whale Foundation founder Greg Kaufman. You’ll soon need a reservation to watch the sunrise.

Supply and demand – in this case, too many vehicles for too few parking spots – has necessitated a reservation system to watch the sunrise at Haleakala National Park. Early-morning crowds to Haleakala regularly exceed 1,000, while parking spaces number just 150, causing visitor and employee safety concerns. “Halloween in Lahaina” returns this Monday!
